- Executive Order
- Following is the text of the Mayor’s Executive Order authorizing parents/guardians who are City of Boston employees to visit schools during the School Preview Time period:
- All full-time employees of the City of Boston who are parents or guardians of children whom they are interested in registering for a school within the Boston Public Schools (BPS) for the first time in September or who will be moving their child to a new school for one of the BPS transition grades (K, 1, 6, and 9), may take up to four (4) hours of work time during School Preview Time to visit such schools.
- Said four (4) hours of work time will constitute paid time off and will not be deducted against personal, sick, or vacation time. Please use the time reporting code S1201 to report hours taken for this purpose.
- Any time off that is taken by an eligible employee pursuant to this Order must be approved in advance by the employee’s supervisor and, in the case of BPS employees, by the principal or headmaster, if applicable. Such approval is subject to operational needs as determined by the employee’s department and/or by the particular school, if applicable. Employees shall also notify in advance the particular schools they intend to visit.
- Should the employee’s department deny the employee’s request based on operational or other reasons, the department shall endeavor in good faith to agree to an alternative time with the employee to visit schools during School Preview Time. Such approval is also subject to operational needs as determined by the applicable supervisor and/or principal/headmaster.
- An eligible employee need not take off the allotted four (4) hours for School Preview Time at any one time. Rather, an eligible employee may divide the four (4) hours during the period of November 8 through January 31, subject to the approval of the employee’s supervisor.
- Any eligible employee who takes time off pursuant to this Order must thereafter provide his or her supervisor with documentation completed by the school that he or she visited to confirm that the employee utilized the time off in accordance with the intent of this Order.
